As temperatures cool and the colors outside change, you might be tempted to light a pumpkin candle, grab a blanket, and cozy up with a game.
Have you enjoyed Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley but want to try something new? Here’s a list of 5 other super cozy games to enjoy this fall.
A Short Hike
“Hike, climb, and soar through the peaceful mountainside landscapes of Hawk Peak Provincial Park. Follow the marked trails or explore the backcountry as you make your way to the summit. Along the way, meet other hikers, discover hidden treasures, and take in the world around you.”
(Steam)
Claire is a young bird whose Aunt May works as a ranger at Hawk Peak Provincial Park. For the summer, Claire visits the Park, and learns that the only place she can get cellphone reception is at the summit of Hawk Peak.
A Short Hike is a perfect cozy game for a relaxing fall afternoon. Although a simple premise, the game is gentle and pleasant. Walking up the trail, you can almost feel the crisp air and smell the smoke and pines. Talking to the other hikers is reminiscent of Animal Crossing, each with their own personality and comments.
Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town
“Your farming life begins in Mineral Town, a charming village surrounded by nature. You’ve returned after many years to restore your late grandfather’s farm to its former glory. Care for crops, livestock, and more as your very own story of seasons unfolds.”
(Steam)
A remake of a game released in 2003, Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town returns with new features to enjoy. Story of Seasons (or Harvest Moon, as the games were formerly titled) is a farming sim that places importance on forming relationships with your townsfolk in order to improve the town and start your own family.
Friends of Mineral Town allows the player to play as a boy or a girl, and provides the option of marrying someone of either gender. This cozy game can become almost addicting as you balance managing your crops and animals with befriending, and perhaps romancing, the interesting (and sometimes quite amusing) townsfolk.
Cozy Grove
“Welcome to Cozy Grove, a life-sim game about camping on a haunted, ever-changing island. As a Spirit Scout, you’ll wander the island’s forest each day, finding new hidden secrets and helping soothe the local ghosts. With a little time and a lot of crafting, you’ll bring color and joy back to Cozy Grove!”
(Steam)
For those who like the real world time aspect of Animal Crossing, I would recommend checking out Cozy Grove. It’s a beautiful game with many memorable characters willing to share their unique stories. There are many activities to enjoy as well, such as fishing, cooking, collecting clothes, crafting furniture, and more.
Night in the Woods
“College dropout Mae Borowski returns home to the crumbling former mining town of Possum Springs seeking to resume her aimless former life and reconnect with the friends she left behind. But things aren’t the same. Home seems different now and her friends have grown and changed. Leaves are falling and the wind is growing colder. Strange things are happening as the light fades.
And there’s something in the woods.”
(Steam)
Night in the Woods is an adventure game that gives the player the chance to be reflective. We follow Mae, who has begun to feel aimless, and her relatable group of friends and neighbors. As you go through the game, you have the option of how much you want to interact with various characters. This choice makes the connections you do choose to pursue more meaningful.
Night in the Woods isn’t afraid to broach the topic of mental illness or to create (surprisingly convincing) queer characters. It asks the big questions, and it asks all of them. But it also acknowledges that not all questions have easy answers. Grab a warm drink and dig in to this wonderful, touching game.
When the Past Was Around
“When the Past was Around is an adventure point-and-click puzzle game about love, moving on, letting go, and the joy and pain of everything in between. The game tells a bittersweet tale between a girl and her lover in a surreal world consisting of disjointed rooms from memories and time. With each gathered clue, solved puzzles, and unlocked door, the girl will find her way, unraveling the secrets between her and her lover, the secrets which she used to know.”
(Steam)
This game features beautiful, hand-drawn art and tells a tale you’ll enjoy cozied up under a blanket. The story might speak to each player in a different way as it touches on various feelings that arise when we love, or have loved. As leaves must change and fall so the tree can start anew, this game gives the player a space to grieve before they must move forward.
